I cannot play to this day

December 18th, 2008

When I grew up as a child, I recall my granpappa’s chess sets. He was very good at playing chess and also really just enjoyed playing chess. He would sit with me at the dining room table and teach me the positions of all the chessmen and the movements, patiently allowing me to lift up and move the pieces even when it wasn’t my round.

He had at least 10 different chess sets in his collection. He had sets made of wood, marble, plastic, and pewter to list a few. My preferred of his chess sets was the one that was made of marble. It was constructed of black marble pieces and set up on its own black marble chess board.

The pieces were so heavy to me and cold to the touch. I remember placing them on my forehead when I would get hot and my grandpa would just holler laughing at me. I have a great deal of good stories surrounding the game of chess, and I can’t play to this day.
